UFO is the abbreviation for an Unidentified Flying Object. It is generally defined as any seeming anomaly observable in the sky that has not yet been identified as a known phenomenon or object. An UFO is normally linked with the claims of visitation through extra-terrestrial life or by conspiracy theories of the government. As a result, they have become a common subject in fiction works. At some point, UFOs come to identification. However, the identification may sometimes not be easy due to the insufficient evidence linked to the UFO sightings usually based on eyewitness accounts and anecdotal evidence.

History of UFOs

There have been a lot of stories concerning fantastical celestial apparitions available since antiquity. However, the term UFO, sometimes UFOB was stated by the United States Air Force in 1953. It was used in reports related to such objects seen in the sky without a clear identification of what it was.

The initial definition by the USAF put it that a UFOB was any object found airborne whose aerodynamic characteristics, unusual features and performance did not conform to any known air vessel such as a missile or an aircraft at that time. The failure to identify any of such objects on these grounds warranted its investigation and thus the name.

Why the focus on UFOs

Before an object could be termed a UFO, it had to be compared with all existing airborne structures of that time. From the start, the term was restricted to a fraction of cases that could not be identified following investigations. All this was done for security reasons.

The United Air Force interest in national security brought to existence an interesting topic that also touched on technical aspects. Towards the end of the 1940s and throughout the 1950s, UFOs were in most cases regarded as flying discs or flying saucers. In its entirety, UFO started to go viral mainly throughout the 1950s, initially in technical literature and later found a lot of use popularly.

A UFO was and has continually been used to define any object whose roots cannot be traced. It gathered a lot of interest especially during the cold war between Russia and the United States. This was a period that was marked with a lot of security issues. Many studies have made a conclusion that the phenomenon is not a representation of a threat to the security of the nation and neither does it have anything that needs to be sought after on scientific grounds.
