The New York Times

Introduction

The New York Times is news daily published in the city of New York. It has been in uninterrupted production and circulation since it was first published on the 18th of September 1851. It ranks second, only behind The Wall Street journal in volume of circulation in the United States. More Pulitzer prizes have been awarded to the New York Times than to any other similar organization. Globally, the New York Times is 39th by volume of circulation. Legal ownership of the paper is vested in the New York Times Company whose CEO is Arthur Ochs Sulzberger Junior. The paper is published in broad sheet format and incorporates special topics every week in addition to its regular news, sports and editorial packages.

History of the NY Times

The founder of the NY Times was Henry Jarvis Raymond. He was a politician who was a member of the Whig party. Henry Jarvis was also a journalist. The avowed aim of the founder of the New York Times was to ensure that society retains all that is already good in it and to stimulate positive change dynamics in the society through articulate journalism. The paper was originally christened the New York Daily Times and it changed to its present title six years after it was founded. The newspaper was notably attacked during the riots that broke out as a result of the forced conscriptions for the army during the American war of independence. Between 1870 and 1871, the New York Times published a string of exposés concerning William Magear Tweed. Tweed was then the influential leader of the Democratic Party which as at then was dominant in the politics of the New York City. This debacle undermined Tweed’s prestige and caused his party to lose its dominance of the city’s hall and this singular feat helped the New York Times to grow in influence. Initially, the paper was undoubtedly partisan, using its editorials to push forward the candidacy of members of the Republican Party. However, by the 1880s the paper had evolved into a more neutral and an analytical news daily.

Format and Style of the NY Times’ Content

The news daily publishes its content according to three main categories. The news section covers national and international news as well as news items that pertain to Washington. It also gives business news, sports news, and news on technology, science and health among others. Opinion articles such as editorials also feature. The features section includes items on entertainment, tourism and many others.
