10 Basic Rules Of Writing An Extended Response Essay

In an extended response essay, you should share your feelings and ideas about something you have read, watched, or listened to. As a rule, students are asked to respond to particular literary works. However, these types of academic papers could easily be used to demonstrate your reaction to an article, film, or song. To create a substantial extended response essay, follow these basic rules:

  1. Read the writing prompt carefully.
  2. It is enough to read your assignment carefully in order to understand what you are expected to do. You may be asked either to argue your position or to demonstrate your knowledge on a certain topic. By restating your prompt, you will get an excellent thesis for your paper.

  3. Stick with a standard structure.
  4. An extended response paper consists of an introduction, a body, and a conclusion.

  5. Start your introduction with the basic information about the work you should respond to.
  6. In the first sentences, state general details about this work. For example, if you should react to a particular book, state the title and the author’s name. Briefly summarize what this work is about.

  7. Close your introduction with a concise thesis statement.
  8. Your thesis should be focused and clear. It should clearly state your position.

  9. Let each body paragraph include a separate supporting idea.
  10. To prove your thesis, you should prepare at least three supporting ideas. These will be the topic sentences of your body paragraphs.

  11. Give enough details to support the main ideas of your response.
  12. Don’t forget that this is the extended response essay. Consequently, your body paragraphs should be detailed and reasoned. Use relevant examples from the text, find apt quotations, provide your personal observations, and prove them with the author’s words.

  13. Make sure that the order of your main ideas is logical.
  14. Let the final sentence of each paragraph fluently lead into the following paragraph. This transition should be expected and reasonable.

  15. Be coherent.
  16. Use appropriate linking words to present your ideas and supporting information. These are the following words and phrases: in my opinion, because, it seems that, I feel that, however, moreover, consequently, a good quote is, etc.

  17. Restate your thesis in your conclusion.
  18. Remember to do it in the first sentence of your concluding paragraph. Focus on your general impression of the topic when restating your thesis.

  19. Do not give any new information in your conclusion.
  20. This is a standard requirement to all essays and you shouldn’t forget about it.
