The Best Strategy For Creating A High School Reflective Essay

The reflection essay is a common type of high school writing assignment that allows you to present your personal and subjective view on an article, a lecture, or some other course-related material. It communicates your critical understanding and engagement of this material to your instructor. Here is the best strategy for creating a high school reflective essay on any topic:

  1. Identify the major themes/ideas
  2. The first step in this strategy is to take a few minutes identifying the material’s major themes and ideas. Underline the thesis or topic sentence (or write out what you believe these are if the material was a lecture, film, etc.

  3. Write down whatever stood out
  4. Start by simply doing s a simple brainstorm session of the things that stood out from the material. Do this without the guidance of the reflective essay prompt. Just get down some ideas on which to build. You may not need these later but it will get you start thinking about the material critically.

  5. Review the assignment prompt
  6. Take a look at the assignment prompt because there are times when the instructor is looking for you to respond to certain things about the material. For instance, keywords such as compare and contrast or critical analysis are terms that need to be addressed to meet the minimum requirements.

  7. Free-write responses to questions
  8. This next step is a really good way of free-writing in response to the questions listed in the prompt and creating what will be the base of your first draft. Answer each question separately, and even if your writing seems repetitive don’t stop.

  9. Organize your work in an outline
  10. Gather up all of your notes and organize them into a neat outline. You should use only your best ideas and only those you can speak extensively on. When creating your outline keep your audience in mind and arrange your ideas in an order that most efficiently and logically communicates them.

  11. Use the outline to write first draft
  12. You should get into the habit of referring to your outline whenever you write your first draft. This will help you stay on track if your thoughts get off the main topic as you progress writing as quickly and as efficiently as possible.

  13. Revising, editing and proofreading
  14. The final step is to make your work as good as it can by revising, editing, and proofreading. Do each of these separately, preferably at three different levels: the paper level, the paragraph level, and the sentence level.
